WATCH: Powerful National Anthem Performance Brings NFL Star To Tears
Though there was much that occurred during Super Bowl LVIII that ignited the internet, such as when Travis Kelce slammed into Coach Andy Reid while screaming at him and the NFL’s inclusion of “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” which is often called the “Black National Anthem,” some things were positive. Among them was Reba McEntire’s performance of the National Anthem, which was so good that it brought one star to tears.
That was the All Pro defensive tackle for the Kansas City Chiefs, Chris Jones. Mr. Jones made it to being one of the top trending topics on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday night, as he was tearing up while listening to McEntire’s powerful rendition of the Anthem.
In the videos that emerged, Jones, who was playing at what was potentially his last Super Bowl with the Chiefs, got teary-eyed as Reba sang. For reference, Jones is potentially leaving the Chiefs, as he and the team can’t agree on the terms of a new contract. but is a five-time Pro-Bowler who was competing for his third Super Bowl ring in Sunday night’s game. This was the Chiefs’ fourth Super Bowl appearance in the past five years.
One commenter, posting about the powerful moment and Jones’s reaction to the Anthem, said, “If this is the last game in a #Chiefs uniform for Chris Jones, it’s going to be hard to forget this moment…” Similarly, conservative personality Graham Allen posted, “Chris Jones crying during the NATIONAL ANTHEM…..is EVERYTHING!! Greatest Country in the world!!”
Similarly, the NFL on CBS X account posted, “Emotions running high for Chris Jones.” Replying, commenters said things like “I’m with you my daughter served and now my grandson is serving it hits me the same way” and “I love this… Imagine being a young boy waiting for moments like this. This is all their dreams coming true. I’ll never clown on that. Good on ya young king”
Also, a conservative on X, Charles Downs, posted, “Awesome to see Chris Jones cry during the National Anthem. Most people love America and want it to be great.” Commenting, people said things like, “Thank you sir for your patriotic display. God’s blessings” and “He cries every game during the national anthem! Awesome guy!”
