A nervous heart beat as I threw the pregnancy test kit into the trash. I had planned to tell my husband Ryan the news over dinner tonight. Not knowing it, the universe had other ideas.
When my MIL looked into the trash can, her face turned into a look of complete shock. Ryan, take a look! “Is that what I reckon it is?”
Fear filled my stomach and I froze. Ethel finally found the horrifying pregnancy test.
She pulled the kit out with massive eyes. “This belongs to you, Jessie?”
I swallowed hard because I felt like a deer in headlights. “Yes, I own it. You should not say anything to Ryan, Ethel. I wish I could tell him myself.”
Ethel was too excited to hold back her excitement. Dear Ryan, Jessie is pregnant! “Are you kidding me?”
Ryan was almost shocked when his jaw dropped.
“You’re pregnant? Does this sound right, Jessie?” I nodded, feeling both embarrassed and happy at the same time.
“Yes, Ryan. I became aware of it today.”
While giving me a bear hug, Ryan’s face broke into a smile.
“OMG, Jesus! OMG, Jesus! OMG!” We’re going to have a baby!”
But as the excitement wore off, a wave of sadness came over me. This was supposed to be our time to enjoy the happiness of starting a family together, just Ryan and me. Because Ethel got in the way, it felt like that moment was taken away from us.
While we were eating dinner, there was a lot of tension in the air that we didn’t say. My feelings of betrayal were still too strong for me to meet Ethel’s eyes.
I finally broke the silence by turning to Ethel. My voice was shaking with emotion. “What were you thinking, Ethel? Why not let me tell Ryan when it’s convenient for me?”
Ethel’s face became softer, and she looked up with regret in her eyes.
That was my mistake, Jessie. After finding the test kit, I couldn’t hold back my excitement. I thought I was a good thing to say. I had a lump in my throat and thought tears might come out. “Ethel, it wasn’t your time to go bad. That one was mine. “Do you have any idea how much this meant to me?”
When Ethel put her hand on mine to comfort me, her voice was filled with real regret. “I believe you, Jessie. Furthermore, I’m deeply sorry. I promise that I will find a way to make it up to you.
But as the truth of what had happened set in, her words didn’t help much. We thought this would be a happy event that we would remember for a long time. But now it felt dirty because of Ethel’s good-hearted but wrong actions.
I can’t accept my mother-in-law’s mistakes.
Sadness hung over the evening like a dark cloud, putting a damper on what should have been a happy event. No matter how hard I tried to forget about it, I would never forget how Ethel had ruined our special moment and changed the course of our journey to becoming parents.
Ryan tried to cheer me up, but Ethel’s betrayal weighed heavily on me, always reminding me of what could have been. I couldn’t get rid of the feeling that our relationship would never be the same again as we went to bed that night.
