Arwilda, at 98 years old, and her husband, Cleovis Whiteside, aged 102, are an extraordinary couple from Arkansas who have celebrated an astonishing 84 years of marital happiness. Their enduring relationship potentially makes them the longest-married couple in the nation, a testament to their deep connection and the secrets that have sustained their union.
Their journey began when Cleovis was 13 and Arwilda was just 9, meeting at a crossroads. Arwilda recalls seeking refuge with Cleovis, who intervened to protect her from his stepbrother Elmo’s behavior. Their paths crossed again at a church event where Cleovis bought Arwilda’s boxed supper, leaving a lasting impression. They attended the same one-room school, further solidifying their bond. On July 24, 1939, they exchanged vows, marking the official start of their lifelong commitment. Despite periods of separation due to Cleovis’s army service, they remained devoted to each other.
After Cleovis returned from service, he pursued studies in auto mechanics while Arwilda focused on homemaking and raising their 12 children, along with offering support to other children in need. Their generosity and commitment to each other have made them pillars of their community, with Cleovis being admired for his altruism. Cleovis fondly expresses his love for Arwilda, encapsulating his deep affection.
Reflecting on their marriage, Arwilda emphasizes the importance of inner strength and resilience, believing that it has guided them through life’s storms. Their advice to couples is to persevere and cultivate this strength. The Whitesides’ legacy extends beyond their marriage, having raised a large family spanning generations. With 12 children, 45 grandchildren, 91 great-grandchildren, and 27 great-great-grandchildren, their love continues to thrive through the bonds they’ve created.
