It can be hard when your friends have their own family, and this woman knows that well. She just wanted to have a good time with her friends, but she had to ask them to leave because of their daughter.
I made food that I thought both kids and grown-ups would like. I cooked chicken parmesan and for dessert, I made chocolate cake. I thought it was a fancy twist on chicken nuggets, which kids usually enjoy.
Mike and Sandra said they liked the dinner, but they might have just been polite. They finished all their food. However, their daughter hardly ate anything during dinner, and I’m not even sure if she ate anything at all.
After a couple of minutes, I noticed Sandra giving me a mean look. I asked if I could help calm her daughter, even though I’m not good with kids. I was really unsure what to do. When I asked what was wrong, Sandra just snorted and said, “Don’t you have anything to say to Charlie?”
It took me a moment to understand that she wanted me to say sorry to her daughter because she didn’t eat the dinner I made. I thought saying sorry might make the girl feel better, so I apologized for her not liking my food.
While Sandra kept asking me to make something different for her daughter, Mike stayed silent and ate his dessert. I got up and asked Mike if he wanted his cake to take home because it seemed like they weren’t having fun at my place. I suggested they leave so Sandra could get their daughter something to eat.
Sandra started saying she thought I was cooking and that she wanted a break from the kitchen. I felt like I might say something I’d regret, so I just told them to leave. Mike looked really embarrassed when they left. I haven’t talked to them since, and now I’m wondering if I made a mistake and overreacted by kicking them out.
