Schumer Unveils Multi-Pronged Plan To Oppose Trump

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) on Monday revealed the Democrats’ strategy to oppose President Donald Trump’s temporary agency, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), and its sweeping government audit.

“Senate Democrats have a responsibility to fight back on behalf of American families as Republicans look the other way in obedience to Donald Trump. And we are,” he said in a letter to the Senate Democrat membership.

With Democrats out of power in both legislative chambers and the White House, their options to challenge initiatives they oppose are limited.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer outlined a four-pronged strategy to counter DOGE, the temporary government audit agency led by Trump-aligned billionaire and special government employee Elon Musk. Schumer said Democrats will combat the audit through Oversight, Litigation, Legislation, and Communication & Mobilization, Fox News reported.

As part of their oversight efforts, Schumer noted that Democrats have already sent “hundreds” of inquiries to scrutinize DOGE’s actions.

The Democratic leader, along with Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Ranking Member Gary Peters, D-Mich., sent a letter to federal employees announcing a new portal for whistleblowers “to report corruption, abuses of power, and threats to public safety.”

Regarding litigation, Schumer noted that court challenges “are already bearing fruit.”

Schumer pointed to federal court injunctions blocking a now-rescinded Office of Management and Budget temporary funding freeze, judicial rulings preventing buyouts and administrative leave for federal employees ordered by the administration, and a judge’s decision restricting DOGE’s team from accessing certain government systems.

“Our committees and my office are in regular communication with litigants across the country, including plaintiffs, and are actively exploring opportunities for the Democratic Caucus to file amici curiae that support their lawsuits,” Schumer wrote.

Schumer also highlighted legislative opportunities to challenge Trump and Musk, specifically citing the upcoming government spending deadline next month. He emphasized that passing a funding deal will require 60 votes in the Senate, meaning Republicans will need some Democratic support.

With this leverage, Democrats plan to push for key priorities in the spending package as both parties work to prevent a partial government shutdown.

“It is incumbent on responsible Republicans to get serious and work in a bipartisan fashion to avoid a Trump shutdown,” Schumer wrote.

Finally, the minority leader stated that Senate Democrats are working to keep their caucus informed and united in order to amplify their concerns to the public — which will occur largely through the Democrat-friendly legacy media.

“And the public is responding,” he wrote. “Grassroots energy is surging. From town halls to protests, Americans are pushing back. The stakes couldn’t be higher, and Senate Democrats are standing with the people to fight back, expose the truth, and stop the Trump agenda.”

That said, most recent polls have shown very high support for President Trump and his agenda.

For example, the president enjoyed historically high support from Black male voters in the November election—nearly 24 percent of Black men cast a ballot for him. But a new survey found that support among that demographic for Trump has since almost doubled.

The latest National Voter Trend (NVT) survey found that 42% of Black men now approve of Trump’s job performance, according to polling firm Cygnal.

The firm’s president, Brent Buchanan, stated that the data indicates working-class, diverse voters, who were crucial to Trump’s November victory, are now showing greater optimism about the country’s future.

“Throughout the election, we highlighted just how far out of touch Democrats had become with the American public, and now after Trump’s victory and rapid action on his campaign promises, it’s clear they haven’t learned much,” Buchanan said.

Trump’s growing support among Black men is part of a broader trend where Democrats are losing backing from key voter groups. The poll reveals that only 40% of voters view congressional Democrats favorably, while 54% have an unfavorable opinion.

In contrast, congressional Republicans are nearly evenly divided, with 47% favorable and 48% unfavorable. John Rogers, Cygnal’s Director of Client Strategy, attributed Trump’s success in addressing major voter concerns as a key factor behind these numbers.
